Jeffrey Bear Foundation - Veterinary Medicine Career Scholarship

As part of the Foundation's efforts to encourage young people to pursue careers in the veterinary medicine field and support their academic  preparation to do so, the Jeffrey Bear Foundation is pleased to offer two scholarships - one to a scholar registered at FAMU and one to a scholar registered at FSU. These awards are intended to assist the  undergraduate student with the costs of completing their undergraduate  education, costs required to pursue an advanced education program, and such costs as may be required to interview for an advanced education  program or an employment opportunity. These awards are intended to assist the undergraduate student with living expenses, application costs, or interviewing costs.

Priority will be given to applications demonstrating -

1.  Strong previous experiences and volunteer efforts supporting veterinary medicine, such as shadowing a veterinarian, volunteering in a clinic, or a member of a professional STEM organization.

2.  Involvement with animals, either through community organizations, medical care of animals, or raising funds for animal care.

3.  High profile of student and individual success.

Eligibility:

The applicant must be a FAMU or FSU undergraduate student enrolled full-time with a gpa of 3.0.

Application Procedures:

Applications are accepted in the fall with a deadline of February 15, 2025.  The following documents must be prepared and submitted electronically through Fluid Review as a SINGLE pdf document:

  • A copy of the applicant's resume or c.v.

  • A narrative explaining the applicant's fit for the scholarship in the form of a personal statement (1 page maximum)
  • A short profile of the applicant's individual success and promise for the field of veterinary medicine (1 paragraph)

Within the Survey Monkey System, you will be asked to provide the email of a recommender (can be a professor, veterinarian, supervisor), so that he or she can upload a letter of recommendation on your behalf for this award.  Letters of recommendation must be received shortly following the application deadline, but no later than February , 2024.

Selection Process and Criteria: Applications will be reviewed by an internal selection committee composed of faculty and community experts.  Your application will be ranked according to the priorities given above as well as your progress and professional productivity in your field as evaluated from your CV/biosketch and your advisor's letter of recommendation.

Award: Successful applicants will receive $1,000. Award notification will be made approximately one month following the application deadline.  The recipients will be expected to receive their award in person so that their photo and short career objectives can be highlighted on the Foundation's website and social media, announcing their scholarship award.
